Yuri Yamashita, percussion
Yuri Yamashita, percussionist, is an active performer of solo, chamber, and orchestral music. She has appeared at major concert halls including Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, Columbias Miller Theatre, Symphony Space, Merkin Hall, and Izumi Hall in Osaka, Japan. Among many distingushed musicians, she has worked with James MacMillan, Jullia Wolfe, Tania Leon, Bright Sheng, Kurt Masur, Jahja Ling, and Brazillian percussion virtuoso Cyro Baptista.
Ms. Yamashita was the percussionist of the Aspen Contemporary Ensemble at the Aspen Music Festival in the 2003 and 2004 seasons. She appeared in the Faculty Chamber Music Series and was featured in Frederic Rzewskis To the Earth, a work for percussion soloist who performs spoken word.
A winner of the Mannes Concerto Competition and an alternate winner of the Juilliard Percussion Concerto Competition, Ms. Yamashita is also a recipient of the Avedis Zildjian Percussion Award.
Born in Hyogo, Japan, Ms. Yamashita currently resides in Brooklyn, NY. She holds degrees from The Juilliard School, Mannes College of Music, and Kobe College. In addition to being a dedicated private teacher, she loves taking classes in West-African Dance and enjoys playing the beautiful Guinean xylophone, the Balafon.
